Eilean Mor

Date: Friday 29 June 2007

Eilean Mor
Celtic World Music group, Eilean Mor, offer a haunting and thrilling mix of traditional songs and tunes.

The band are based in Australia but their music is founded on the Scottish and Gaelic tradition, uprooted to Australia during the Highland Clearances.

The band is singer/songwriter, Ruth Lee Martin, guitarist, Bill Grose, Ed Rodrigues on percussion, Bill Williams on double bass and Chris Stone on fiddle. Eilean Mor are appearing in Montrose as part of their second UK tour which extends for more than a month throughout England and Scotland.

The musical focus of Eilean Mor is on original songs from the pen of singer, Ruth Lee Martin, as well as songs and tunes from the Scottish and Gaelic traditions. The traditional part of their repertoire is interpreted with roots, jazz and world music influences. Mouth music, Waulking songs, rowing songs, lemense and hot fiddle tunes are all part of a normal gig.

The repertoire of Eilean Mor also includes rare songs written in the Gaelic language in Australia during the nineteenth century by exiles forced to leave their homes during the Highland Clearances. Drawing on the Scottish Gaelic tradition, the band has its own unique Australian flavour.

Ruth Lee Martin is a Scottish born Australian singer/songwriter of original and traditional songs and roots in the Scottish Tradition.

Bill Williams is currently studying upright bass at the Australian National University. He has performed at venues as diverse as the Sydney Opera House, The Australian Blues Festival, and the National Celtic Festival.

Chris Stone is one of Australia's most promising young fiddlers with roots in the Scottish fiddle tradition. He currently studies violin at the Australian National University School of Music. He also performs with the ANU Symphony Orchestra.
