The Sandy Wright Duo
Date: Tuesday 1 February 2011
Sandy Wright is a longtime underground hero in his native Edinburgh. Laterly, he has been championed by the likes of Eddi Reader, Kris Dever and Karine Polwart, all of whom have recorded one or more of his songs.
His long awaited debut album entitled "The Songs of Sandy Wright", was released in 2010 to great acclaim. It is a two CD set. One is a handpicked selection of his best compositions sung by Sandy Wright himself. The second CD features an array of eminent singers and songwriters performing new versions of Sandy Wright material. The performers include the aforementioned Reader, Drever and Polwart, plus the likes Boo Hewerdine, Chris Wood and Roddy Woomble.
The song writing style of Sandy Wright can be compared to that of legend such as Tom Waits or Johnny Cash, but with a distinct Caledonian salting of Ivor Cutler and Michael Marra.
Shortly before his appearance at Montrose Folk Club, the songs of Sandy Wright will feature as one of the headline concerts at the Celtic Connections festival and at a performance at the Queens Hall in Edinburgh.
