Michael Marra

Date: Thursday 29 May 2008

Michael Marra
Montrose Folk Club are presenting a one-off concert on a Thursday evening to coincide with the opening of the Montrose Music Festival which will feature free live music throughout Montrose over the weekend of Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 30th and 31st May and 1st June.

The Club have organised a spectacular First Night for the Festival with an appearance by Michael Marra, the renowned Singer / Songwriter from Dundee. Michael Marra is widely regarded as Scotland's equivalent to Randy Newman, the famous American Singer and Songwriter.

No one other than Michael Marra has a repertoire when an alternative Scottish National Anthem like "Hermless" can pub shoulders with a tribute to French Pop Star, Johnny Halliday. The poignant tale of the divorcing couple who must divide their joint record collection in "Beefhearts and Bones" contrasts with the burning criticism of religious stupidity in "Chain Up the Swings".

After an unsuccessful attempt in the Seventies to become a Rock Star with the Dundee Band, Skeets Boliver, Michael Marra has been a professional solo musician for the last 20 years. He has also been the writer and musical director for a number of theatrical productions at Dundee Rep.

Michael Marra released his first solo album entitled "Gaels Blue" in 1985. This rapidly came to be regarded as a Scottish classic. Since then he has released a further 6 albums of original material, which only scratched the surface of his song output. He is creating a body of work that can matched by few of his contemporaries.

The songs of Michael Marra have been covered by such diverse performers as Frankie Miller, Eddi Reader and Billy Connelly. In addition, Michael Marra is an outstanding live performer. Anyone who has witnessed his solo shows will testify to his talent to entertain through his combination of humour and thought provoking lyrics.
