Martin Stephenson
Date: Tuesday 8 April 2008
Martin Stephenson is a supremely gifted singer, songwriter, musician and performer.
Born in County Durham in the North-East of England in 1961, Martin Stephenson was originally inspired by the Punk Rock phenomenon of the late Seventies. He formed the Band, Martin Stephenson & The Daintees in 1985. The name, "The Daintees" was deliberately chosen as a response to the humour listless and angst of much of the music of that time.
The debut record of Martin Stephenson & The Daintees on London Records of 1985 called "Boat to Bolivia" positively burst with excellent rootsy pop songs boasting a veritable rainbow of styles.
After living in London for a number of years, Martin Stephenson tired of the music business and the quest of his record company for a hit single. He chose instead to play mainly in Folk Clubs and tiny Bars. He also released several highly acclaimed albums on the West London based independent label, Demon Records.
For several years Martin Stephenson has lived in the Scottish Highlands. He spends time there refining his already prodigious musical skills, whilst touring constantly.
Martin Stephenson performs both solo and in a Band format with The Daintees. He will be appearing at Montrose Folk Club as part of a solo tour.
In his concerts, Martin Stephenson performs his own songs as well as material drawn from many diverse sources. His music and guitar style is an eclectic mix displaying influences as diverse as Doc Watson, Scott Joplin, Merle Travis and guitar ace, Roy Buchanan. He has toured with artists ranging from Janis Ian, John Martyn and Bert Jansch to Hot House Flowers and Melissa Etheridge.
