Steve Tilson
Date: Tuesday 22 April 2008
Steve is the writer of many songs which have become classics of the folk repertoire. These include "The Slipjigs and Reels", "The Naked Highwayman" and "Here's to Tom Paine".
The stature of Steve Tilston on the English Folk Scene was recognised in 2006 by the release on Free Reed Records of a boxed five CD set entitled "Reaching Back, The Life and Music of Steve Tilston". This is a rare accolade. The last similar five CD box set released on Free Reed Records was for Richard Thompson.
Born in Liverpool and raised in the Midlands of England, Steve Tilston made his recording debut in the early Seventies with the classic "Acoustic Confusion". He has been turning out quality albums ever since.
Though known as a song writer, Steve Tilston has always had an ear for a good traditional song. On his most recent CD, he included new interpretations of several old favourites.
Steve Tilston is a celebrated artist in both the UK and abroad, winning accolades in Europe, Australia and the USA. His songs have been recorded by Fairport Convention, Dolores Keane and Kris Drever. "Here's to Tom Paine" is the adopted theme song for the Tom Paine Society of America and has featured in live shows by Bruce Springsteen.
As well as appearing as a solo performer, Steve has featured in a number of bands and duos. His most recent collaborations have been with American, Brooks Williams, in A Transatlantic Song Swap and with daughter, Martha Tilston in the charming "like father, like daughter…" show.
