Date: Tuesday 11 March 2008

Emily Smith with Jamie MacLennan
Though only in her mid-twenties, award winning Scottish Singer and Songwriter, Emily Smith, has firmly established herself as one of the leading names on the Scottish Folk music scene.

For her appearance at Montrose, Emily Smith will be performing in a duo format with Jamie MacLennan on guitar, fiddle and backing vocals. Emily accompanies herself on both keyboards and piano accordion.

Since becoming BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year in 2002, Emily Smith has gained further accolades. She was a Nominee in the Scottish Trad Music Awards for 2003 in the "Up and Coming Artists of the Year" Category and for the 2005 Awards in the "Scots Singer of the Year" Category.

After completing an Honours Degree in Scottish Music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama, Emily is now pursuing a full time career as a Performer. As well as being a respected singer of traditional material, Emily has also attracted great interest with her own distinctive songwriting.

She became the first ever winner from Scotland in the USA Songwriting Competition in 2005 when winning the Folk section with her song entitled "Edward of Morton". Another of her songs called "Always a Smile" was short-listed in the Competition.

Emily has released two studio albums, firstly, "A Day Like Today" on Footstompin' Records in 2002 and "A Different Life" in 2005. Her third album under the title of "Too Long Away" is due for release in April of this year.
