Kris Drever - Cancelled
Date: Tuesday 15 January 2008
This show is CANCELLED
At the 2007 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Kris Drever won the category for Best Up and Coming Artist. Kris is also now a member of the exciting 3-piece band, Lau, together with Fiddler Aidan O'Rourke of Blazing Fiddles and Accordionist, Martin Green.
For the 2008 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards which will be held in London in February, Lau are amongst the 4 nominees in several categories including Best Band, Best Live Act and Best Album.
It is a considerable coup for Montrose Folk Club to have negotiated the gig by Kris Drever in January since during that month Kris will be very busy at the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow. He will be appearing on a number of occasions in a featured solo concert, with Lau, his other Band Session A9, and as backing guitarist for other performers.
Kris Drever is the son of Singer-Songwriter Ivan Drever, formerly lead vocalist with Celtic Rock Band, Wolfstone. Having spent his adolescence in Orkney listening to Bands such as Metallica, whilst learning Guitar, Kris left home for Edinburgh at 17 where he quickly became part of the very healthy Folk Session Scene. His first Band, Fine Friday, grew out of his involvement in the sessions at Sandy Bell's, Edinburgh’s most famous Folk Pub.
In 2006 Kris released his debut solo Album entitled Black Water on Reveal Records to considerable acclaim. It was nominated for the Album of the Year Award at the Scottish Trad Music Awards in 2006. Produced by John McCusker, the Album featured backing performances by Kate Rusby, Eddi Reader and Donald Shaw of Capercaillie.
Kris Drever is an outstanding musician on both Guitar and Banjo. However for many his recent popularity stems from his very distinctive vocal performances. He is equally adept at singing both traditional songs and contemporary material by the best of current songwriters, including such as Boo Hewerdine and Steve Tilston.
