Jackie Leven
Date: Tuesday 4 December 2007
Jackie Leven is a Scottish songwriter and folk musician now living near Bath.
He is very much a cult figure in the music world, having a dedicated following who appreciate his fine song writing and unique blend of music, which mixes folk, blues, celtic and punk influences.
Jackie Leven was born in Fife in 1950 into a Romany family. He spent his childhood and teenage years in Fife. He began performing in Folk Clubs such as The Elbow Room in Kirkcaldy where he received encouragement from the likes of Archie Fisher and Hamish Imlach.
Leaving Scotland for London he became involved in the Punk scene of the 70s forming the Band, Doll by Doll. This band released 4 albums before splitting in 1983.
Jackie Leven disappeared from the music scene until embarking on a solo career in 1994. His first album entitled "The Mystery of Love is Greater than the Mystery of Death" earned considerable critical praise. Since then he has been extremely prolific, releasing another 12 official solo albums and a number of fan club only releases.
In 2005 alone, he released 2 CDs, one entitled "Jackie Leven Said" in collaboration with crime writer, Ian Rankin and another entitled "Elegy for Johnny Cash".
Jackie Leven has made a number of duo appearances with crime writer, Ian Rankin, who is also from Fife. Their joint show is entitled "Twa Twisted Fifers".
The most recent release of Jackie Leven in 2007 was the CD called "O What a Blow That Phantom Dealt Me" which was the "Record of the Week" earlier this year for the "Iain Anderson Show" on BBC Radio Scotland.
Jackie Leven will be appearing at Montrose Folk Club as part of a very extensive Autumn Tour between September and December which will feature nearly 60 dates in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Holland and Sweden.
