Colcannon are a five piece Band from Adelaide, South Australia who play contemporary folk music with an Australian feel.
The instrumental arrangements of Colcannon are as powerful as they are musical whilst their vocals are simply stunning. With 8 CDs to their credit, international tours have become a regular occurrence for Colcannon who can be heard most years from Germany to Japan.
Montrose Folk Club are very fortunate to be able to present an appearance by Colcannon who normally appear in much larger venues than Folk Clubs. Colcannon have been able to fit in a visit to Montrose between the end of their 2007 UK Tour and the beginning of their November Tour of Canada.
The founder and leader of Colcannon is guitarist John Munro, who was born in Glasgow. John Munro is perhaps best known for having toured most of the World over the past 20 years as the guitarist accompanying his fellow Scotsman, now resident in Australian, Eric Bogle, the writer of such famous folk anthems as "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" and "The Green Fields of France".
The members of Colcannon are Kat Kraus on lead vocals and keyboard, John Munro on guitar, mandolin and harmony vocals, Pete Titchener on guitar and harmony vocals, Bridget McDowall on fiddle and Damien Steele Scott on bass.
One of the features of performances by Colcannon are the dynamic vocals and charismatic stage presence of lead singer Kat Kraus. As well as being a founder member of Colcannon, Kat Kraus is on of the most respected vocalists on the South Australian music scene.
The repertoire of Colcannon is song-based featuring the work of John Munro and Kat Kraus, as well as material from many of the best of contemporary Australian song writers.
Over the past 5 years, Colcannon have performed at most of the World's most prestigious Folk Festivals, such as Winnipeg and Calgary in Canada, the Edinburgh Folk Festival, the Fylde Festival in Lancashire as well as the leading Australian Festivals at Woodford and the National Folk Festival in Canberra.
Colcannon bring a "joie de vivre" to every performance. Their music has been described as "simply stunning" by The Scotsman. If you want to laugh and cry or if you just want to experience the joy of great musicians who love to perform, Colcannon are for you.
